From 1944 to 1951, Robert Thompson worked alongside Emperor Haile Selassie in a variety of roles including: Colonel of the Ethiopian Air Force, head of the Haile Selassie I Secondary School at Kutabi in Addis Ababa, Superintendent of Schools for Kaffa Province, Associate Director General of Education, Associate Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Education, Advisor in Foreign Affairs within the Government of Ethiopia, and appointed Deputy Commissioner of Boy Scouts in Ethiopia.
