History

Student Ministries is a department within the Student Life division. The mission of this department is to "develop spiritually maturing disciples of Jesus Christ who are fully devoted to God, who cultivate and model Christ-like character, and who selflessly love and influence others." (Email message from Tim McCarthy, May 5, 2003)
Student Ministries is made up of four sub-groups. As of May, 2003, these were:

  1. Prayer, Arts and Worship Ministries, overseen by the Chapel Worship Coordinator (Tim McCarthy)
  2. Discipleship, Small Groups and Sports Ministry, overseen by the Coordinator of Discipleship and Small Groups (Lisa Kutz) and the Coordinator of Sports Ministry and Men's Discipleship (Dave Heidebrecht)
  3. Outreach and Evangelism, overseen by the Outreach and Evangelism Coordinator (Alex Kirstiuk)
  4. Global Projects and Services Ministries, overseen by the Coordinator of Global Projects and Service Ministries (Greg Ouellette)
All five coordinators report to the Director of Student Ministries, Rob Rhea.

There is some indication within the archival record that Student Ministries was preceeded by a department called Extension Ministries. This department organised tours for various student groups, including a number of music ensembles, as well as summer missions trips. Its mandate included evangelical outreach, and, to a lesser degree, student recruitment. The head of Extension Ministries appears to have reported to Church Relations until ca. 1992, when this department was moved to the Student Life division. (One organizational chart shows the Director of EM reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement)
Loyal Makaroff served as Director of Extension Ministries from 1986 to 1988; John Harris assumed this position until May of 1989, when Peter Dueck became the Director. (In a letter dated April 3, 1991, Hazel Campbell refers to John Harris as Director of Extension Ministries.) In 1997, it appears that this department was completely restructured; at that time, Phil Jenion was providing oversight.
