General note
Prosperity certificates were introduced in 1936 by the Social Credit Party-led government of Alberta as a proposed method to counteract the devastating impacts of the Great Depression. They held the value of a $1 bill, provided that the holder had attached a total of 104 stamps to the certificate. However, due to the cost of such stamps, and the fact that the certificate expired after only two years, the prosperity certificates were ultimately unsuccessful. It is interesting to note that Robert N. Thompson was once a member of the Social Credit Party of Canada.
