Robert N. Thompson acquired or were gifted the artifacts and object throughout his life, be it his military career serving as an instructor for the Commonwealth Air Training Plan during World War II, his work with Sudan Interior Mission in Ethiopia, his work with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education and then as a Canadian diplomat for Ethiopia from 1953 to 1958. Thompson was involved in politics for the Social Credit serving as president (1960-1961), national leader (1961-1967), and Member of Parliament (MP) for Red Deer of Alberta (1962-1972). He was an administrator and instructor at TWU from the 1970s into 1980s. Thompson was also involved in numerous organizations, see RNT-SF-2 "Organisations - General, A to Z".
Scope and content
Sous-fonds consists of various artifacts and objects that showcase Robert Thompson's personal, military social, educational, and political life. The collection includes textiles such as military caps and badges and a family kilt, jewelry, medals and pins, baskets, metal, stone and wood statues and figurines, swords and daggers, and organic objects such as a peacock fan and a fly swish made of horsehair. In addition, there are plaques awarded and given in recognition for Thompson's involvement in numerous organizations. The collection also includes a small sample of political cartoons.

Condition varies from items. The majority of items were on display for over six years in the Robert N. Thompson Building and those items that are paper based, cloth and organic base have light damage.
