General note
Robert N. Thompson spent a great deal of his life serving in the armed forces. His career in military began in 1940 when he enlisted in the Canadian Army in the 15th Alberta Lighthorse and started his training at Sarcee Military Base. Later that year he resigned from the Army to enlist instead with the Royal Canadian Air Force Commonwealth Training Scheme as a navigator and pilot officer as World War II raged on. By 1942 he was a Flight Lieutenant commanding the No. 7 Cadet Squadron. In 1943 he was transferred to the Royal Air Force Special Assignment to East Africa Campaign, and subsequently served as a colonel and later a commander in the Ethiopian Air Force between 1943 and 1945. In 1970 he also received a medal for his service in Vietnam with Korean Forces.
