Robert Thompson was an evangelist working with the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) when he became associated with the Kale Keywet Church and their work with church-related humanitarian aid and support with schools in Ethiopia.

Scope and content

Object is a shield shaped plaque honouring Robert Thompson's involvement in the Kale Heywet Church located in southern Ethiopia. The plaque is made of plexiglass pinned to a plywood base that has been painted gold. The plaque's background is aqua with gold lettering, and features in the centre an aerial view of the church building with the emphasize of santuary space with a large window with a cross. Thompson's name is highlighted in a white background.

Plaque reads: "Kale Heywet Church Debre Zeit [above is written the same in Amharic], Robert N. Thompson, [month written in Amharic]. 1984, Sept. 1991."

The Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church was founded in 1927 by the evangelical missionary organization Sudan Interior Mission and Dr. Thomas Alexander Lambie.

"Debre Zeit" is the Ge'ez phrase for Mount of Olives, one of the nine minor feast days that is observed in the fifth week of lent that is celebrated in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

General note

In 1942, Robert Thompson joined the Sudan Interior Mission. In 1951, assumed the role of director of the Sheshamane Leporsarium located in southern Ethiopia, and the following year was appointed Supervisor of Schools in East Africa to assist directly with the Educational Programme of the National Evangelical Church in the Kambatta district.
