Objects and Artifacts Related to Robert N. Thompson

Sous-fonds consists of various artifacts and objects that showcase Robert Thompson's personal, military social, educational, and political life. The collection includes textiles such as military caps and badges and a family kilt, jewelry, medals and pins, baskets, metal, stone and wood statues and figurines, swords and daggers, and organic objects such as a peacock fan and a fly swish made of horsehair. In addition, there are plaques awarded and given in recognition for Thompson's involvement in numerous organizations.

The fonds consists of correspondence, speeches, articles, notes, minutes, photographs, scrapbooks and other records relating to Thompson's personal life, his involvement with various organizations, his military career and work in Ethiopia, his political career as a Member of Parliament (MP) and national leader of the Social Credit Party of Canada, and his work as an educator.

Note that in addition to these records, the RNT Fonds is also comprised of the following:

  • Audio and video cassettes, filed in the database with Coll. 02, the A/V collection; also physically filed with other A/V materials
  • Scrapbooks containing news clippings and personal memorabilia sorted in chronological order (from 1960 to 1996)
  • Scrapbooks containing political cartoons clipped from newspapers, sorted in chronological order (1963-1996)
  • Unprocessed reel to reel (approximately 41) and audio tapes (approximately 55) mostly pertaining to Thompson’s political career
    • Thompson also donated published Social Credit materials, including 187 booklets/pamphlets, as well as a selection of books (84) from his personal library on the following broad topics: early education textbooks, teaching educational texts, air force, Ethiopia, Amharic language, local history, and a family bible that has no annotations.

This sous-fonds consists of records created during Thompson's political career in Canada, first with the Social Credit Party (1960-1968) and later with the Progressive Conservatives (1968-1972), and includes correspondence, campaign materials, newspaper clippings, and political speeches, broadcasts as well as political posters and political cartoons.

Political Cartoons

This subseries consists of political cartoons depicting Robert N. Thompson as leader of the Social Credit Party of Canada and his relations to other Canadian political figures, such as John Diefenbaker, Lester Pearson and Tommy Douglas. The political cartoons depicts social and political attitudes in the 1960s from his role in Parliament to his roles in Africa are explored to the economic benefits of Social Credit leadership are examined in these Cartoons.

Metal Spear Point

Object is a hand-forged metal spear point. The head of the spear is sharp on both ends, and a ridge runs down the center. The head connects to the lower portion of the spear point, which is marked with five lines that mark the circumferance of the lower portion. Below this the metal splits open to allow for the insertion of the spear handle.

Boy Scouts Patrol Leader Hat Badge

Object is a large Boy Scouts patrol leader hat badge that features the organization’s logo a fleur-de-lis with star cut outs on the outer leaves. “BOY SCOUTS BE PREPARED” is stamped on the badge with “Boys Scouts situated on a crescent under the fleur-de-lis. The text “Be Prepared” is stamped on the bottom section of the badge on a folded ribbon. The fastener is a brass link pin that is inserted through two eyelets. There is a manufacturer stamp the back that says Scully, Montréal.

WYFL/APYFL ROC Chapter Time Change Calculator

Object consists of a time change calculator stored in a hard red plastic felt case. The time change calculator has written in English and Chinese characters: "WYFL/APYFL ROC Chapter." The calculator displays the date, the local time and world zone. There is an orange on/off button located on the bottom left corner. The calculator was made in Taiwan. The cities listed on the time change calculator includes: Amsterdam, Bangkok, Chicago, Dever, Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Houston, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, Toronto, Tokyo, and Z

Air Cadets Canada Lapel Pin

Object is a Air Cadets of Canada lapel pin, one piece stamp gold eagle with its wings spread out surmounted by a maple leaf; gold scroll shaped band below the eagle with gold letter capitualized text in relief "AIR CADETS CANADA". The fastener is a slide pin backing.

WACL First Conference Lapel Pin

Object is a circular enamel lapel pin of the Word Anti-Communist League (WACL) logo attached to a gold plate that reads in blue text: "The First Conference, Taipei, China, 1967." The logo features a flattened image of the globe with five continents in a mint green (North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia), that are on top of the golden letter "V" with a flamed torch in the centre and gold rays beaming outwards. The torch flame is white. The organization's acronym is written in gold capitualized letters on the bottom of the logo. The pin has a screw back.
