Staley Lecturer: Dr. Lynn Buzzard - November 14 / unidentified speaker

Audio 18a consists of the following recording:
Title: Dr. Lynn Buzzard – Staley Lecture
Guest Speaker, Dr. Lynn Buzzard, explores Christian interaction with daily life through the example of Ezekiel. He discusses “capture” as a theological problem, not just a physical one. He discusses the complexity of the vision experienced by Ezekiel and the difficulty of interpreting the vivid imagery documented in this book. Dr. Buzzard argues that the message of the vision is that God is mobile. God does not live in the temple, but everywhere. Next, he discusses the difficulty of modern western Christian life which faces a reduction of the Lordship of Christ. He argues that government has stripped the power of Christians over the evolution of culture, including science, the arts, history, and education. The price for being left alone by the government is too high since it denies the core principle that no area of human life is beyond the range of the Lordship of Christ. He illustrates his point with a story relating to the founding of America. Dr. Buzzard argues that Christians need to enter all of the areas that have been taken from them by the government, and declare that Jesus Christ is Lord of all.
Audio 18b consists of the following recording:
Title: Unidentified Speaker
An unidentified female speaker from an English department, possibly belonging to a university in Edmonton, relates a story about sharing a classroom with her husband. His efforts to create a loving environment by bringing in personal items allowed for a place where students could grow. The speaker then takes written questions from the crowd on a variety of topics such as personal growth, politics in Quebec, and Mormon advertising. She then analyses the phrase “contributing to the peace of the city” from Jeremiah politically and economically in terms of modern society. She argues for seeking the Kingdom of God in all actions and uses the Lord’s Prayer to illustrate her point. The speaker then relates several stories. She discusses the concept of “telling our story”, or sharing testimony, and making maps of the human experience. She poses the question "can the blind lead the blind?" The speaker argues that stories are the key to sharing experience, belief and meaning. She explores a variety of forms in which a Christian writer may relate his/her faith, including autobiography, short story, and novel. She argues that Christian writers are unwilling to put in the effort to learn the craft of writing and consequently do not produce fictions as well-crafted as those of secular writers. The recording fades out towards the end.
