Interview: Geoff and Beverly Still

Title: Geoff and Bev Still – “Interview”
Geoffrey Still - president of Focus on the Family (Canada) and Trinity Western University Board member -and his wife, Bev, are interviewed in an office setting by an unidentified woman regarding his involvement with Trinity Western University. He discusses the mission of TWU, the importance of discipline, his own experiences and other issues.

[Geoff Still was a pastor and businessman who retired in 1982, then served as President of Focus on the Family Canada for eight years, from 1986 to 1994. He was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1925 and passed away in Vancouver, BC, January, 1995.]

Audio 136a consists of the following recording:
Title: Karen Pascal – “Why Hurt Kids”
Brian Stiller, of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, interviews Karen Pascal, a filmmaker who produced a documentary - under the EFC's campaign slogan, “Why Hurt Kids” - on the nature of pornography in Canadian Culture. Stiller mentions that the EFC's Social Action Commission had commissioned Pascal to create this video. Important issues that are raised include the exposure of individuals under the age of 18 to pornography, the integration of violence with pornography, child pornography, and the degradation of women. They also discuss pornography and crime, reactions of various groups to the research that her organization is doing, and the importance of influencing society.
Audio 136b consists of the following recording:
Title: Karen Pascal – “Why Hurt Kids”
This is a continuation of the interview on Aud. 136a. Pascal discusses the revelations she experienced while working on her film and reveals her hope for future projects. Stiller thanks her for her work.

[Stiller served as President of Youth For Christ Canada until 1983, when he was appointed President of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada. He founded EFC's national magazine, Faith Today. In 1997, he took on the role of President of Tyndale University College and Seminary, where he remained until his retirement in 2009.]

Interview: Austin Stouffer (ACTS) interviews David Heinrichs - March 1 / Chapel: Neil Snider (TWU President) - March 5

Title: Austin Stouffer with Dave Heinrichs – “Canada as a Mission Field”
Austin Stouffer, Dean of Trinity Western Seminary, interviews missionary Dave Heinrichs, introducing him as "Reverend Dave Heinrichs, a longtime friend of mine involved with the Evangelical Free Church of Canada for many years of his life. He spent about 20 years of his life in missions work with the Free Church in Europe; Germany, Austria, and is now the director of Overseas Missions for us for the Evangelical Free Church of Canada." They discuss Canada as a missions field, the impact of the church on improving the lives of a variety of people, and how to choose a church.

Title: Neil Snider – “History of Trinity Western University”
In an extended Chapel service, President Snider recounts the history of Trinity Western University, referencing recently celebrated Founders' Week events. He focuses the application to the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and on the development of Trinity Western University into a four year degree granting school. He discusses the AUCC voting process in great detail.

Chapel: Dr. Austin Stouffer (ACTS) - September 26-27

Audio 138a consists of the following recording:
Title: Dr. Austin Stouffer – “I Live”
Austin Stouffer, Dean of Trinity Western Seminary, speaks in chapel on the subject “I Live”. He discusses the importance of living one’s life for Jesus Christ and God. He argues that by abandoning one’s self to Jesus Christ completely, one can live a better life. He notes a few key things he’s learned: knowledge helps faith; faith should be a living faith; faith should be reliable; action towards trusting God is more important then the amount of faith you have. He connects the word “live” to the word “faith”. This is a continuation of the lecture series on Aud. 8b.
Audio 138b consists of the following recording:
Title: Dr. Austin Stouffer – “I Am”
Austin Stouffer leads the group in prayer. At [0:55] another chapel service begins. This is a continuation of the lecture series on Aud. 138a. Austin Stouffer speaks in chapel on the subject “I Am”. He discusses the importance of embracing and understanding the death of Jesus Christ. He connects the word “am” to the word “being”. He discusses 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 at length. He argues that faith isn’t “doing” it is “being”.

Audio 139a consists of the following recording:
Title: Unidentified Speaker (Peg Byars?) – “Gideon” / Unidentified Speaker - “Ethics” / Dr. Austin Stouffer – “Abandon”
An unidentified speaker, possibly named Peg, discusses the question “Who will accept the cloak of Gideon?” at length. She references passages from Judges 6 and 7, and discusses the importance of shattering one’s own fixed way of thinking and allowing God to shine his light through one. At [14:18] an unidentified man is introduced [by Guy Saffold?], and begins speaking. He discusses how to work around those who have other beliefs in regards to ethics. He takes questions from those present. He discusses the negative aspects of Utilitarianism at length. The recording trails off. At [20:35] another (higher volume) recording begins, with the presentation already underway . Austin Stouffer, Dean of Trinity Western Seminary, begins speaking at chapel on the topic of “Abandon”. He mentions his own recent 50th birthday and draws a correlation between bungee jumping and faith. He encourages students to abandon themselves to God. He cites clinging to one's definitions of wealth, intelligence, sex appeal, and happiness, as the primary factors that inhibit abandoning oneself to God. He concludes with a prayer and is thanked by another speaker. The volume of the recording drops again.
Audio 139b consists of the following recording:
Title: Unidentified Speaker – “The Four Ps of Christianity” / Unidentified Speaker – “Submit to Faith” / Unidentified Woman (Peg) – “Gideon”
This chapel service occurs the day after Aud. 139a. An unidentified speaker [possibly Reverend Ron Swanson, President of the Evangelical Free Church of Canada] discusses the four Ps of marketing: product, pricing, packaging and promotion. He applies these principles to Christianity. He cites several biblical examples to reinforce his ideas. An unidentified speaker prays, thanking God for "the Reverend Swanson.". Students are dismissed, and a praise chapel taking place the next day is mentioned. At [9:28] a South African speaker shares his personal faith journey. He asks the students to submit and surrender all aspects of their lives to God. He ends with a prayer. At [23:59] a woman, Peg [Byars?], speaks on finding God on a precipice above the Fraser River- halfway between Hell’s Gate and Hope. This is possibly a continuation of this speaker's lecture on Aud. 139a. She discusses Gideon at length.

Audio 14a consists of the following recording:
Title: Bob Burkinshaw on CBC 690 - May 15. – 2003Part 2
This recording is last portion of Dr. Burkinshaw’s appearance on the CBC Radio Show “BC Almanac” continuing from Aud. 14b. He answers a few questions about Christ’s worldview and the relationship between fundamentalism and the KKK. The recording then cuts to a different episode of the same program which features a discussion on off-road vehicle legislation in BC. There is also an interview with journalist Andrew Cohen and his book “While Canada Slept.” There is a strong static noise through the entire recording.
Audio 14b consists of the following recording:
Title: Bob Burkinshaw on CBC 690 - May 15. – 2003 Part 1
This is the first half of Bob Burkinshaw’s interview on the CBC radio program "BC Almanac." The interview begins with an analysis of church attendance and religion in BC and the Fraser Valley. Burkinshaw discusses the historic irreligiousness in British Columbia. Burkinshaw then proceeds to answer questions asked by various callers on a wide range of topics having to do with religion. He argues that there is a spiritual hunger in the province and people are searching for meaning. Burkinshaw briefly discusses cloning with one caller and the ambiguity of census data with another. They are joined by Reverend Koten Benson of the Lion’s Gate Buddhist priory in Vancouver. The recording is continued on Aud. 14a.

Richard Sutcliffe (TWU Professor) Tape #5 - May 14

Audio 140a consists of the following recording:
Title: Mr. Richard Sutcliffe – “Integrity in Leadership or Ethics and the Christian Leader”
Rick Sutcliffe, Professor of Mathematics and Computing Science, speaks at a conference at the Marriott Hotel, Toronto, Ontario on “Integrity in Leadership or Ethics and the Christian Leader”. He discusses negative and positive ethics at length. He addresses the importance of knowing “right” and “wrong”. He argues for wholeness and consistency, and illustrates this with several anecdotes. He states that knowledge is not enough by itself, and there are some things that are not worth knowing about. He is cut off in the middle of a sentence.
Audio 140b consists of the following recording:
Title: Mr. Richard Sutcliffe – “Integrity in Leadership or Ethics and the Christian Leader”
This is a continuation of the recording on Aud. 140a. Sutcliffe takes a few questions from those in the audience before running out of time.

Staley Lecture: Dr. Mary Van Leeuwen - February 9

Audio 142a consists of the following recording:
Title: Dr. Mary Van Leeuwen, Staley Lecturer – “The Effects of the Commitment Model of Marriage”
Mary Van Leeuwen, a prominent Christian Feminist and professor at Eastern College in St. David, PA, speaks at chapel on the post-modern ‘commitment’ model of marriage. Specifically, she examines committed, homosexual relationships and the children who are raised in this environment. She discusses social parenting at length, and the effects of the “plurality” of family forms. She concludes that asymmetrical parenting, particularly a lack of a father figure for a young boy, increases misogyny in men. She cites several studies. She leads the students in prayer.

A man - possibly Greg Charyna, TWU Alumnus (1989) and member of Trinity's Public Relations department - interviews Rebecca Verhaeghe, alumna (1984), on how her experience at Trinity Western University impacted her life. [The interview may be conducted over the telephone; the recording volume for Verhaeghe's replies is very low] She describes her current position, as a social worker and family therapist working in a hospital in York County, and discusses the impact of faith-based education. This interview is intended as the basis of an advertisement for Trinity Western University in Faith Today magazine.
