Church Service: Dr. Neil Snider (TWU President) - October 20

Audio 134a consists of the following recording:
Title: President Snider – “United Evangelical Free Church Service 8:30am”
This is a service at a Free Church in Seattle. There is music and singing for the first portion. The congregation prays and a young woman discusses missions. Others share their testimonies. At [12:07] President Snider speaks on the development of Trinity Western University into a four-year institution. He relates several personal stories to underscore the importance of the University. He discusses the development of the Laurentian Leadership Centre. He describes the multidisciplinary nature of a “calling”. He begins to speak about the Legal Challenge [Education Court Case] but is cut off in the middle of a sentence.

This is a continuation of the recording on Aud. 134a. Snider discusses the Legal Challenge at length. He encourages those present to find their inspiration and calling. The group is led in prayer and there is music and singing.
Audio 134c consists of the following recording:
Title: President Snider – “United Evangelical Free Church Service 11:00am”
This is a service at a Free Church in Seattle. The service opens with music, introductions and testimony. At [16:00] Dr. Snider speaks on the glory of God and fellowship. He discusses the importance of developing a godly lifestyle, referencing the book of Ephesians at length. He emphasizes the importance of answering the call of God.

This is a continuation of the service on Aud. 134c. Snider relates a personal story to underscore the importance of a humble relationship with God. He relates stories of how God is impacting young people. He discusses the importance of community and life-long friendships. At [13:00] Dr. Snider is thanked for speaking and the congregation unites in song.

Dr. Jerry Chip MacGregor (TWU Administrator?) - January 17 / Men With Shades (TWU Music Group) - January 18

Audio 76a consists of the following recording:
Title: Dr. Jerry Chip MacGregor – “Interview on Sex”
Dr. MacGregor is interviewed by Ron, a student, in regards to Christian sexual behaviour. This is part of a multi-day lecture series. Chip collected anonymous questions from the student body. He addresses the concepts of how far is too far, loneliness, guilt, abstinence, forgiveness, masturbation, what to do if a couple crosses the line sexually, and the spirituality of sex. He provides three keys to integrating spirituality and sexuality: a dynamic relationship with God, drawing standards outside the heat of the moment, and discussing standards as a couple. To recover, he recommends discussing faltering with God, reestablishing relationship with God, and correcting the behaviour. Finally, he discusses the effects of sexual abuse. [MacGregor served as Associate Vice President of Student Life at TWU in the early 1990s. He has also been a pastor, author, and literary agent.]

Audio 133a consists of the following recording:
Title: President Snider – “Welcome” / Vern Storey – “Importance of Worldview” / Arvid Olson?
This may be a continuation of the lecture on Aud. 132b. Dr. Snider discusses the kind of person who is needed within Christian leadership, mentioning the positions of RAs [Residence Assistants] and Student Leaders, and referencing the apostle Paul. He encourages his listeners to make positive change on the campus as servant leaders. Snider comments, "it's good to have you back." [Possibly this presentation is part of a student orientation session, or retreat] At [3:02] another recording cuts in, with laughter and an unidentified man speaking. He discusses college statistics from 1982/1983 regarding the performance of Trinity students at UBC. Around [7:00] he refers to Arvid [Olson?] He then discusses the importance of worldview and Trinity's mission; he explores the concepts of goals and objectives, and a the idea of a "preferred future." He mentions some of the rights and responsibilities TWU will have in 1988, in terms of program development, and the role Ken Davis might play in that, by way of example. Near the end of the recording a train's whistle can be heard in the background. In the final two minutes of the recording another unidentified speaker is heard [possibly Arvid Olson?]. He suggests integrating goal setting with prayer, and thanks Dr. Vernon Storey [Executive Vice President] for his presentation. Participants applaud. The speaker states that he wants to review Orientation Week, just before the recording is cut off.

Audio 217a consists of the following recording:
Title: “Northwest Christmas Banquet 1982”
An unidentified man leads the singing of Christmas Carols. Those present are welcomed. Garth Johnson, from the Board, brings greetings and prays. Faculty members are introduced individually. Thanks are expressed. Library volunteers are introduced. Special guests are introduced. The group is led in prayer. There is further singing of Christmas Carols, and music, which is cut off in the middle of a song.

Chapel: Ian Scott - September 30

Audio 124a consists of the following recording:
Title: Ian Scott – “The Word and the Light”
Ian Scott speaks at a chapel service on the Word and the Light. He personalizes and retells biblical stories in order to relate to his audience. He retells the story of the shepherds and the birth of Jesus, as well as the story of Jesus healing Lazarus, and the crucifixion. Finally, he leads the group in prayer.

Baccalaureate Service: Neil Snider (TWU President) - April 21

Title: Dr. Neil Snider – “RNS Baccalaureate Address”
President Snider speaks on the responsibility of the Christian Disciple to be reconciled to God. He emphasizes the importance of finding an eagerness for God. He advocates for spiritual maturity. He discusses the importance of how one responds to temptation. He discusses the importance of acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord. He believes the greatest miracle is when an individual commits his or her life to Christ. He emphasizes the need to live for Christ and to be responsible to Him.

Baptismal Service

Audio 158a consists of the following recording:
Title: Many Speakers – “Baptismal Service”
This recording consists of a Baptismal Service at Black Lake in 1986. This service is led by an unidentified speaker. District Chairman Steve Watkins [?] is called on to read from the book of Titus. A passage from Hebrews 9 is read by the new pastor - Aubrey Dau [?] - of the Portland Avenue Church in Tacoma. Brother Charles McGee [?] is asked to read from Colossians 2. The primary speaker addresses the position of the Evangelical Free Church on baptism. The group is led in prayer. There are numerous baptismal candidates from three different churches. The pastors from the respective churches present the candidates for baptism, and the candidates are baptized in the order in which they are presented.

Dr. Don Page, Academic Vice President, lectures on the changing nature of Canadian society. He discusses the struggling economy in Canada and the Third World, as well as changes in the Asia-Pacific Region. He discusses the dynamic of greed and poverty and questions the ethical implications. He discusses genetic engineering. He asks, “Do we let science expand on what it finds possible, or what society finds acceptable, or what the taxpayer finds affordable, or what God says is morally acceptable?” He discusses changes in birth rates in Canada. Finally, he discusses the challenge of Christian students to develop in a secular system. He speaks to the importance of the Christian Leaders in Residence program.

This recording contains several advertisements for Trinity Western University. Each begins with a distinct piano riff and then a member of the university or Christian community speaks on the benefits of TWU; featured people include Terry Winter, Jim Janz, and Al Willms. These are duplicates of some of the ads on Aud. 171a There is also an advertisement for a music night featuring Wendy Swanson and Crystal Hicks.
