Trinity Western College - research notes

File consists of articles, maps, and notes gathered by Juanita Snyder as part of a project to research the history of Fort Langley, and the Langley Farm. It appears that at the time there were plans in place to call the new administrative building "Hudson Bay House." (It was later named the Mattson Centre.) All materials were gathered in a binder; binder tabs were labelled as follows: McMillan Time; HBC Ag Timeline; Farming at Fort Langley; Location Buildings; Big House; Store House; Coopering; Blacksmith; Outpost of Empire; HBC Post Farming; Sheep and Wool; Villa Gardner; Brochures; Miscellany.

Copies of archival records sent to archivist, Sylvia Stopforth, by the Hudson's Bay Company Archives

File consists of the following materials, provided by Heather Beattie, Archivist for the Hudson's Bay Company Archives (Winnipeg):
I looked through nearly all of the Western Department land records in searching for the answers to your questions. I was unable to locate the original document granting the Langley Farm land to the HBC. I did find a document entitled “Statement of all Lands belonging to The Hudson’s Bay Company in the Western Department as on 31 January 1868” (HBCA H.1/6). It shows that Lot 20 Group II (2 acres) and Lot 21 Group II (500 acres) on the Official Survey of the District of New Westminster were a Crown Grant to the HBC on 12 April, 1864; Lot 22 Group II (noted as Langley Farm, 1500 acres) was purchased as a Crown Conveyance (it looks like the price is listed as 312 pounds – 10%). According to a letter from Alexander Munro to the London Secretary, dated 15th April 1884, Lot 10 Langley Farm (191 51/100 acres) was sold to a Mr. Stoddart for $5740 (HBCA B.226/b/47 vol.1, fo. 61). I have copied these records, as well as some other correspondence relating to the sale of Lot 10.

Copies of Counterfoils of Crown Grants made to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1864

File consists of photocopies of microfilmed copies of Crown Grants for District Lots 21 and 22, Group 2, New Westminster District. These records are dated 12th, 1864, and show that the Hudson's Bay Company recieved Lots 19 (200 acres) and 21 (500 acres) as grants, and purchased Lot 22 (1500 acres) as a Crown Conveyance. These lots were originally part of the Hudson's Bay Farm, also known as the Langley Farm.

Significant dates in the Hudson's Bay Company Farm (1778-1885)

File contains what appears to be an initial draft for Juanita Snyder's book (see File 03), as well as a complete manuscript entitled "The Hudson's Bay Farm in its Historical Context". This manuscript contains the following chapter titles: Chapter I. James McMillan-‘my Staunch and manly Friend’; Chapter II. The Hudson’s Bay Farm; Chapter III. The Advent of the Cross; Chapter IV. Fort Langley-Brigade Terminus and Supply Base; Chapter V. The Gold Rush.
