Title: Robert Kuhn / Benno Friesen – “Keeping the Faith – Tyranny, Tolerance and Charter Values” / John von Heyking – “Keeping the Faith – Alexis de Tocqueville”
This is a continuation of the lecture on Aud. 299b. Bob Kuhn (Legal Counsel for TWU during Legal Challenge) discusses religious freedom and Charter values in Canada. He cites several examples of cases in Canada, particularly those involving educational institutions and governing bodies. At [16:45], Benno Friesen (former Trinity faculty member and retired MP) responds to and expands on Bob’s presentation. He discusses the influence of the marketplace on accepted religious practice. He cites examples of bias against evangelicals and Christians in the community and media. At [35:50] John von Heyking (Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Lethbridge) begins presenting his paper on the political thought of Alexis de Tocqueville and the relationship between the democratic desire for equality and freedom of religious associations, and the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its effect on creating a new Canadian nation. He is cut off in the middle of a sentence.

Title: John von Heyking / Calvin Townsend – “Keeping the Faith – Alexis de Tocqueville”
This is a continuation of Aud. 300a. John von Heyking continues his discussion of Alexis de Tocqueville and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He cites several examples and discusses what it means to be a Canadian citizen. At [31:41] Cal Townsend (TWU faculty member) responds to John’s paper. He discusses modern Republicanism at length.
