Scope and content

Audio 88a consists of the following recording:
Title: John Reimer, Member of Parliament – “Christians in Parliament”
Dr. Don Page introduces John Reimer, an MP [1979 to 1980, and again from 1984 to 1993] from Kitchener Ontario, and inaugurates him as the first Christian Leader in Residence. Reimer speaks on whether being a Christian makes him different from his colleagues in Parliament, and on how his faith influences his life. He reads from the book “Twilight of a Great Civilization” by Carl Henry. He discusses some of the issues he’s faced as an MP, including abortion. He discusses the development of laws regarding abortion in Canada at length. He also discusses his views on homosexuality and the Human Rights Code. At the close of Reimer's presentation, President Snider presents him with an award.
Audio 88b consists of the following recording:
Title: Chuck Macknee – “Self Esteem”
Charles Macknee, Professor of Psychology at TWU, addresses a group - possibly during Chapel service. He mentions that he is filling in for Jamey McDonald, who was not able to be there. Macknee discusses the importance of self esteem and the struggle to differentiate the concept from self interest and selfishness. He explores the idea of how to maintain a positive sense of self and a relationship with God. He argues that one must first take care of oneself in order to serve God. He defines self-esteem as the willingness to give up being the center of one’s world. One must give up the desire to be God’s equal. Finally, he argues that one must be accepting of oneself, loving in a charitable way of oneself, valuable to oneself, and willing to endorse oneself. Finally, he leads the group in prayer.
